FIND THE PERFECT BIKE RACK FOR ANY ADVENTURE

When it comes to taking your bike on car journeys, a bike rack is an essential accessory. Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, a tour into nature or a family holiday, with the right bike rack you can take your bikes along safely and easily.

Choosing the right bike rack can be a challenge as there are different types, each with their own pros and cons. If you have already decided on an XLC rear bike carrier, there are further options to consider. The first step is knowing the type of bike you’ll be mounting on the rear bike rack.

Bike rack for wide MTB tires and fat tyre bikes

The different types of bicycles also have tyres of different thicknesses. So, it is not surprising that there are special bike racks for wide tires, so that you can also take your mountain bike safely with you on holiday. This applies to mountain bikes, of course, but also to fat tire bikes.

For any bikes with wide tyres, you need a bike rack with wider tyre holders to ensure a secure and stable attachment. A bike rack with adjustable brackets that can be altered to the width of your tyres is also a good option.

Bike rack for carbon frames

Carbon bikes, in particular the frames, are more fragile than conventional steel or aluminum. For this reason, it is important to fasten carbon frames as gently as possible. Our Almada Work-E model is equipped with special frame clamps for carbon to offer gentle mounting and safe transport.

Always be careful when using a bike rack with carbon frame bikes. Make sure the bicycle is stable and securely fastened (but not too tight) before starting your journey.

Bike rack for e-bikes

E-bikes are usually slightly heavier than conventional bicycles due to additional components like the motor, battery and electronics. However, the weight may vary depending on the model and manufacturer.

Check the weight of your e-bike before buying a rear bike carrier. A typical e-bike weighs 20–30 kilograms, while a conventional bicycle usually weighs 10–15 kilograms. All our rear bike rack models are suitable for transporting e-bikes.

Different bike-rack rules in different countries

Regulations and restrictions for rear bike carriers on the motorway differ depending on the region and country. Find out about the rules where you’re going before you begin your journey.

Here’s a handy checklist of what to consider when purchasing a bike rack for a trip abroad:

  • Permissible total weight of the vehicle: The permissible total weight of the towbar must not be exceeded. Find out the weight of your vehicle and bikes to calculate the maximum weight of the rear carrier you can buy.

  • Lighting: Does the rear bike carrier have to be equipped with suitable lighting and accessories to ensure visibility and safety? This may include rear lights, indicators, and a license plate holder.

  • Labelling: In Europe, only Italy and Spain currently require warning signs for bicycle racks. For other European countries, there is no obligation to attach a warning sign to your bike rack. Check before you leave for your trip, in case there is a change in the law.

No matter which country you travel to, make sure you drive below 80 mph and avoid sudden maneuvers. Staying calm and looking ahead is the best way to drive safely when using a rear mounted bike rack.

Criteria for buying a rear bike rack

When it comes to choosing a rear bike mount, there are some important aspects to consider. Here are a few of them:

Towbar
The bike carrier must fit the vehicle on which it is to be mounted. Make sure the rear bike rack is compatible with your towbar, which must be made of steel. A bicycle rack is not suitable for towbars made of aluminum or cast iron (GGG40).

Number of bikes
Make sure the bike rack has enough space to carry all the bikes you want to take with you. If you want to load more than two bicycles, the Beluga or the Azuras are ideal.

Bike type
The type of bike to be transported will determine the bike rack you need. There are different kinds of carriers for different types of bikes, for example, e-bikes, carbon frames and fat tyres.

Attachment method
Check how the bike rack attaches to the vehicle and whether you can attach it yourself.

Carrier weight
Make sure the bike carrier does not exceed the total weight limit of your vehicle.

Anti-theft device
All XLC bike rack models have an anti-theft device and are lockable.

Accessible and foldable
Make sure the bike rack is designed so you can easily access the boot or tailgate once it’s fitted.

Convenience
Consider how easy it is to load and unload the bikes onto the rear bike carrier. A bike rack that is simple to use can make transporting bikes much easier.

In conclusion, choose the right option for your vehicle and ensure a safe, hassle-free journey.
